How to Superheat Steam

The boiling point of water at sea level is 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Any increase in pressure will increase the boiling point. An industrial steam boiler heats water to the boiling point and as steam is produced, the pressure also rises. For each pressure point, there is a corresponding boiling point. This is the saturated temperature of the steam or steam at the temperature of the boiling water it came from. Superheated steam is saturated steam that has absorbed more heat.

Things You'll Need

  • Industrial saturated steam boiler
  • Superheat steam generator
  • Connecting pipelines with block valves

Instructions

    • 1

Start the saturated steam boiler and produce steam at a certain temperature and pressure.

    • 2

Start the superheated steam generator which is a unit that will add more heat into the saturated steam. Open the block valves connecting the boiler and the superheated steam generator.

    • 3

Operate the superheated steam generator to a temperature that is 50-100 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the saturated steam temperature. Note that as the superheat is applied to the saturated steam, the volume occupied by the steam increases.
