How to Make Aluminum Dust

Aluminum dust is typically used as fuel in pyrotechnics (fireworks) or as a pigment in paint. Generally, aluminum dust, or powder, can be purchased at paint stores. Most aluminum powders are produced using industrial ball mills that grind aluminum stock into a wide range of particle sizes. The material is highly reactive and care should be taken when working with aluminum dust or powder.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the aluminum can into the vise and secure it tightly. Position the can so it is on its side with the end sticking out of the vise.

    • 2

Place the small pan underneath the can's end to catch the aluminum dust.

    • 3

File the end of the can with the metal file. Make smooth strokes with the file. Ensure the dust falls into the pan. Repeat this until the quantity of dust is acquired.
