Things You'll Need
Instructions
Inflate a round balloon until it reaches about 5 inches diameter. Using papier-mâché paste, which can be made using a simple mixture of one part flour to one part water, coat strips of newspaper and begin layering them over the surface of the inflated balloon. Create two layers and allow them to dry. Repeat this process once more, then wait 24 hours.
Use a pin to make a hole in the dried, covered papier-mâché balloon; this will pop the balloon underneath. Cut the hollowed-out papier-mâché in half, removing the popped balloon from inside and discarding it.
Using a diagram of the anatomy of the human eye, begin painting and labeling the different parts. Use white paint as the base of your eyeball for a realistic model; otherwise, consider creating a colorful, creative interpretation of the various parts of the eye. Paint the outside surface of the halved eyeball to look like the superficial exterior of an eyeball, then use the inside edge to demonstrate the inner workings. Include parts of the eye like the retina, optical nerve, iris, pupil and cornea. Allow time for the paint to dry.
Display the eyeball models around the classroom; you can hang them with string from the ceiling, or you can mount them on a base to be able to stand upright on their own.
