How to Make a Toggle Switch

A toggle switch allows electricity to either flow or not. You can make your own functioning toggle switch that will power a light-emitting diode to illustrate this principle. Supplies from a hardware store are needed, as are tools from around the house.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood block, five-by-seven inches and two inches thick
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • 2 metal screws
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Metal pointer, three inches long
  • Metal screw
  • Wooden dowel, three inches long and 1/8 inches in diameter
  • Bonding glue
  • Battery clip
  • Battery
  • LED bulb
  • Electrical tape

Instructions

    • 1

Place the wood block on the table. Measure three inches down from the upper-left corner of the block with a ruler. Measure two inches in from the right of the three-inch mark and make a dot at that point with a pencil. Fasten a metal screw with a Phillips screwdriver halfway into the wood at the marked dot.

    • 2

Measure three inches down from the upper-right corner of the block with a ruler. Measure two inches in from the left from the the three-inch mark. Make a dot at the two-inch mark with a pencil.

    • 3

Place the blunt end of a metal pointer on the dot. Place a metal washer on the blunt end of the pointer. Fasten a metal screw through the washer and halfway into the wood.

    • 4

Apply bonding glue to one end of the wooden dowel. Place this end of the wooden dowel on the center of the metal pointer. Let the glue adhere to the dowel and pointer overnight.

    • 5

Attach the battery to the battery clip. Wrap the exposed end of the red wire attached to the battery clip around the screw going through the metal pointer. Tighten the screw.

    • 6

Wrap the exposed end of the black wire attached to the battery clip around the shorter of the two conductive pins attached to the bottom of the LED. Wrap a strip of electrical tape to secure the wire to the pin.

    • 7

Twist the end of the other conductive pin attached to the bottom of the LED around the screw that is opposite of the metal pointer. Tighten the screw.

    • 8

Grip the dowel and move the end of the pointer that is now a toggle switch to the left. It will make contact with the screw and light up the LED. Move the pointer away from the screw to disengage the toggle switch and cease the illumination of the bulb.
