How to Make Binoculars for a Science Project

If you are in need of a crafty science project for your child or student, look no further than your leftover toilet paper rolls. You can have your kid create his own binoculars to use in bird-watching adventures or make-believe games. Not only will this project engage your child's scientific mind and creativity, it will keep him occupied beyond the project itself. He can also create colored binoculars without putting a strain on your wallet.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 toiled paper rolls

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a colored sheet of construction paper to cover your toilet paper rolls.

    • 2

Measure the length of one of the toilet paper rolls. Cut a piece of construction paper the same length, wide enough to wrap once around the toilet paper roll. Cut a second piece of construction paper the same size for the other roll.

    • 3

Wrap one piece of construction paper around a toilet paper roll, gluing it down as you go. Repeat this step for the second toilet paper roll.

    • 4

Glue the two toilet paper rolls together along the lines where the edges of the construction paper meet. Ensure that the holes on each side of the rolls are lined up side by side.

    • 5

Punch a hole near the top of each of the two outside edges of the binoculars to attach to a string.

    • 6

Cut a 3-foot length of string. Tie each end of the string through one of the punched holes in the binoculars. Your child can place the string over her neck to carry the binoculars.
