How to Convert dBuV to dB

The late 20th century saw consumer electronic devices become commonplace, and in 2011 people rely on them for computing, entertainment, communication and navigation. However, convenience brings unwanted consequences, including radio interference between different pieces of equipment. Manufacturers now conduct mandatory electromagnetic compatibility testing to ensure that their products neither cause nor are susceptible to interference. During EMC testing, engineers subject equipment to high intensity electromagnetic fields, usually measured in decibel microvolts per meter, or dBuV/m. The difference between two dBuV values can be expressed in microvolts and in decibels, or dB.

Instructions

    • 1

Note the two values that you wish to convert to dB. Check that both are expressed in dBuV.

    • 2

Subtract the smaller value from the larger. For example, if the two values are 56 dBuV and 12 dBuV, then the difference between them is 44 dB.

    • 3

Check your calculation. Record your answer, which is the difference between the two values in dBuV, converted to dB.
