How to Make a Wave Project

Many types of waves exist in nature -- water waves, air waves and microwaves are only a few. For science, they all behave in the same manner, as waves of energy regardless of the medium. By illustrating how a wave works in a recognizable way, such as with water and a wave machine, the concept of how all waves behave becomes clearer.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the aquarium on a sturdy, large surface capable of bearing its weight. You can also use a large cooking pan in lieu of an aquarium. Make sure that the material of the container is clear plastic or glass.

    • 2

Fill the container with at least 2 inches of water or more if desired. Leave room at the top for the water to expand without overflow.

    • 3

Fill one end of the aquarium with sand or dirt and until you have a "beach" area above the waterline. If necessary, dip out some of the water to achieve the effect.

    • 4

Place the fan approximately a foot away from the water side of the tank and set the fan on its lowest setting. This will create waves that will break on the "shoreline." A faster setting of the fan will create a different effect, as will a steeper "beach" if more sand is added.
