How to Keep a Pendulum at Rest

The basis for a pendulum is that the free moving weight at the end of a string or green rod is influenced by gravity as it swings back and forth. To keep the pendulum at rest, you must negate the effects of gravity on the string or rod. You can use supplies from a hardware store and from around the house, as no tools are required.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic container, 10 by 10 inches, 1 foot deep
  • Sand

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the plastic container almost to the top with sand. Place the container on the table or surface next to the pendulum.

    • 2

Grip the pendulum. Raise the pendulum up with one hand. Move the container beneath the pendulum with the other hand.

    • 3

Insert the pendulum into the sand until it is completely covered. Release the pendulum. Wait as the vibrations in the string or rod the pendulum is attached to cease.
