Industrial Metrology
Industrial metrology, one of the three main fields in metrology, is mainly concerned with measurements in regard to production and its quality control measures. It encompasses calibration procedures, intervals and controls. The metrologist manages the measurement processes and the instruments used to measure, making certain that they comply and are suitable to be used in the intended manner.
Legal Metrology
This field deals with measurements that are used in legal trade and those that are subject under regulatory control. The metrologist sees to the units of measurement, the instruments used in those measurements and the methods employed to do the measurements.
Scientific Metrology
This field of study is concerned with issues that arise regardless of the quantity being measured. This field encompasses units of measurement, errors and issues that involve the instruments used for measuring. There are many different specialized areas of scientific metrology: mass metrology, dimensional metrology, temperature metrology, electrical metrology and chemical metrology.
Behind The Measurements
Measurements units are defined and constantly refined by nations involved in the International Treaty of the Metre and the International Committee on Weights and Measures (CIPM), the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), and the national measurement institutes of the individual country.
Who Can Help
If you need to know more about metrology, or about the measurements you are making, you might need to contact a metrologist. A metrologist can guide you through a number of problems, both theoretical and practical. If you need to speak to an expert or simply need to learn more about measurements then a good place to start is the Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS), which offers a large membership of users and service providers.
