Sodium tetrathionate dihydrate is a salt with the chemical formula, Na2S4O6 2 H2O, that dissolves reasonably well in water. You should avoid trying to dissolve it in hot water, however, since as noted in the MSDS, sodium tetrathionate is heat-sensitive and may break down if heated. The procedure described here will prepare a 0.05 molar solution of sodium tetrathionate, which is a solution that contains 0.05 moles of the salt per liter of solution; if you need a higher or lower concentration, you can adjust the amount of salt you weigh out while keeping the total volume unchanged.
- Goggles, gloves and coat (put these on first)
- Spatula
- Scale
- Sodium tetrathionate
- Powder funnel
- 100-mL volumetric flask
- Cold, deionized water

Measure 1.532 grams, or as close to this as you can get, of the sodium tetrathionate, using the spatula and scale.

Pour the sodium tetrathionate into the volumetric flask through a powder funnel.

Add about 50-mL of deionized water to the flask, and swirl gently until the contents dissolve. If necessary, add more water to ensure they dissolve fully.

Add deionized water until the level in the volumetric flask reaches the line marked on the side of its neck.

Cap the flask and invert it to mix the contents.
