How to Calculate the Duration of a Storm in Minutes

A storm is one of the most dramatic natural phenomena you can experience. Storms can be as destructive as they are awe-inspiring. Meteorology is the branch of science dedicated to studying storms and weather patterns in general. Although storms are often accompanied by rain, thunder and lightning, the scientific definition used by meteorologists classifies storms as winds that reach 55 miles per hour. You can use this definition to calculate storm duration.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the speed of wind using an anemometer. The anemometer has a built-in sensor that detects wind speed and projects in on a digital display. For accurate readings, position the device so its back is to the wind.

    • 2

Record the time at which the wind speed exceeds 55 miles per hour. This marks the beginning of the storm.

    • 3

Monitor the anemometer to see when the wind speed drops below 55 miles per hour, which is the end of the storm. Record this time as well.

    • 4

Calculate the elapsed time in minutes from the start of the storm to the end.
