How to Find the Cubic Feet of a Room

The customary unit system used in the United States employs cubic feet to measure volume. Rooms in a house usually have rectangular prism shape. In this case, the volume is the mathematical product of the area and the height. Computing the room volume is an interesting project for elementary school students. Also, you need to know this parameter to estimate the amount of materials required if you are doing room renovation or repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the room with a measuring tape. For example, the length is 12 feet and the width is 6 feet.

    • 2

Multiply the length by the width to calculate the area of the room. In this example, the area is 12 x 6 = 72 square feet.

    • 3

Measure the height of the room; in this example, the height is 5 feet.

    • 4

Multiply the area of the room by its height to calculate the volume in cubic feet. In this example, the volume is 72 x 5 = 360 cubic feet.

    • 5

Multiply the volume by 35.315, if the measurements are made in meters, to calculate the volume in cubic feet. For example, if the room has 80 cubic meters it corresponds to 80 x 35.315 = 2,825.2 cubic feet.

    • 6

Multiply the volume by 27, if the measurements are made in yards, to calculate the volume in cubic feet. For example, if the room has 60 cubic yards it corresponds to 60 x 27 = 1,620 cubic feet.
