Do-It-Yourself Centrifuge for Algae

Centrifugation is a method of separating algae. A centrifuge is a motorized device that uses a rapidly spinning drum to extract the algae from water. This centripetal acceleration separates the algae from the water. Extracted algae has many uses, ranging from biodiesel fuel to food supplements, and the process can be done at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an algae source. Using the tank or bucket, collect the algae water. Algae can be found growing in ponds, pools, outdoor water bowls, etc.

    • 2

Turn on the centrifuge. You may have to experiment with the speed to determine a speed that is high enough to extract the algae from the medium.

    • 3
Ponds oftentimes have algae growing on top.

Pour algae water into the open centrifuge through a funnel. Try to pour in the water as fast as possible but avoid overflow.

    • 4

Slow the centrifuge when you begin to see the algae concentrating along the sides. A lot of the algae will fall to the bottom with the water, but the rest will cake along the sides of the centrifuge. This cake is what is used for food supplements and extraction of oil for biodiesel fuels.
