Things You'll Need
Instructions
Stack three 8-by-1-inch ceramic ring magnets on a flat surface. You can find large magnets at electronics or science supply stores or online.
Put a piece of cork through the center of a 1-by-1/4-inch ceramic ring magnet. Trim the cork with a craft knife if needed. Cut the cork so it extends about 1/4 inch above and below the magnet.
Drill a hole through the exact center of the cork. Push the 1 1/2-inch dowel through the hole so that about 3/8 inch is protruding from the side of the magnet that is repelled by the stack of 8-inch ring magnets. This is important so that the top will float on the magnetic waves.
Sharpen the short end of the dowel with a craft knife. The top will spin on this point.
Place the CD jewel case on top of the stack of magnets. Put the top in the center and give it a good spin. Slowly lift up the jewel case, and when you get an inch or two above the magnet stack, the top should begin to float on its own. Remove the CD jewel case.
