How to Find One's Natural Frequency

Natural frequency, also called fundamental frequency, refers to the lowest frequency in a system that resonates. It is often used to measure the frequency of musical instruments. For example, a natural frequency may be the number of times a violin resonates per second. You can also calculate the natural frequency of a human being. Men have a lower natural frequency than women because they have deeper voices due to physiological differences. You will need a speed of sound calculator.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the room temperature using your thermometer.

    • 2

Enter the temperature into your speed of sound calculator. Make a sound at your natural pitch level. You might sing a note you feel most comfortable singing or say a long drawn out word such as "wow." Press "calculate" while you make the sound.

    • 3

Measure the length from the base of your neck to your lips using your measuring tape. This can bend and curve according to the shape of your neck and head. Use the same units you used with your speed of sound calculator.

    • 4

Divide the length by the speed of sound your calculator calculated.

    • 5

Divide the answer you obtained in Step 4 by four. The result will be your natural frequency.
