How to Plot an Air Velocity Profile

Mathematics is a key subject within education and can be divided into several sub-topics. Mechanics is a branch of mathematics and involves the study of moving bodies. Essential concepts of mechanics include position, time, velocity and acceleration. In order to visualize the relationship between two of these important quantities, a graph is normally plotted. Plotting the velocity of an object as it flies though the air, as a function of time, leads to an air velocity profile.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a table with two columns. Label the first column heading "Time(s)" and the second column heading "Velocity m/s". Place the values for the time and velocity into the relevant table columns.

    • 2

Draw the axes on the graph. Label the horizontal (x) axis "Time (s)" and the vertical axis "Velocity (m/s)." Look at the range of values that the time and velocity span over and choose a suitable scale. The scale can be chosen by finding the range for the time/velocity and dividing the range into integral units.

    • 3

Find the first value of time on the x-axis and the corresponding value of velocity on the y-axis. Place a cross where the two values intersect. Repeat this for all values of time and velocity. Connect adjacent points to obtain the air velocity profile with a ruler.
