How to Make a Potato Watch

Potatoes, with their high concentrations of important vitamins such as C, B6 and K, not only powers humans, but, if used correctly, can also provide electrical power. With a few basic household items, you can turn any potato into a cheap alternate battery for basic devises such as watches, clocks or lamps and, more importantly, transform what could have been greasy french fries into nourishing food for your child's brain.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 potato
  • 1 knife
  • 2 galvanized nails
  • 2 pennies
  • 3 8-inch insulated copper wires with 2 inches of insulation stripped off the ends
  • 1 digital clock

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the potato in half using the knife and put the two halves cut-side down.

    • 2

Wrap one length of copper wire around a penny and another around a galvanized nail.

    • 3

Stick the nail and penny into opposite sides of one half potato. Be careful that they are not touching.

    • 4

Wrap the remaining wire length around the remaining penny and press it, along with the other nail, into the other half of potato. Again, put them on opposite sides to make sure they are not touching.

    • 5

Connect the wire around the penny in the first half of the potato to the nail not wrapped in wire in the second.

    • 6

Touch the loose ends of wire in each potato half to the positive and negative ends of the watch or clock's battery compartment. If it doesn't work at first, try touching the wires to the opposite sides.
