How to Decide When to Drop a Class

At the later stages of education, students have the option to choose which subjects they wish to do to. This can have advantages since the student can choose a subject in which they have strengths. It can also mean that a student can try new subjects and sometimes this can lead to a student struggling with new material. If you are not doing particularly well, you may decide to drop out and choose a more suitable subject.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the average grade so far. Speak to the teacher and find out what your grade is thus far. Ask how this compares to the average of the class. If the grade is significantly lower than the class average, it may be worth thinking about dropping the class.

    • 2

Decide if the class is enjoyable. If a class is enjoyable it may be worth continuing even if the average grade so far is below the class average. If the class is not enjoyable and your grade is low, there may be little motivation to continue.

    • 3

Check how important the class is. If the class is an essential component to the course you are pursuing, you must find additional time to study harder and obtain a better grade. If the class is just an optional module, it may be possible to transfer to another class where you can get a better grade.

Many schools have a deadline date by which students may withdraw from a class without penalty and without affecting their overall grade point average. If you withdraw prior to the deadline, there are no consequences. If you drop the class after the deadline, your grade will be reported as part of your academic records or you may receive an "Incomplete" grade in your records, either of which may be adverse to your academic pursuits.
