How to Make a Laser Pointer Strong Enough to Burn

Laser pointers are manufactured with a built-in limitation on how much electricity reaches the laser diode. To make a laser pointer's light strong enough to burn paper at close range, remove this restriction. The laser pointer will have to be partially disassembled. Tools from around the house can be used.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Soldering iron
  • Micro flat-edged screwdriver
  • Bonding glue

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the battery cap and remove the batteries from the back end of the laser pointer. Place them aside.

    • 2

Grip the back end of the laser pointer in one hand. Place the jaws of the needle-nose pliers around the barrel at the front end of the laser pointer. Twist the pliers to break off the front end from the pointer. Place the front end aside.

    • 3

Place the back end of the pointer on a work surface with the section of the laser board protruding out of the front facing to the right. Rotate the back section so the screw on the board is facing up.

    • 4

Heat a soldering iron for 8 minutes. Apply the tip of the soldering iron to the electronic chip in front of the screw. Remove the tip after 8 seconds have passed. Unplug the soldering iron.

    • 5

Insert the tip of a micro flat-edged screwdriver into the screw. Rotate the screw a quarter turn clockwise. Remove the screwdriver.

    • 6

Apply bonding glue around the rim at the front of the back section of the pointer. Place the front section of the pointer over the laser board and against the rim of the back section.

    • 7

Press the two sections together and hold them in position for 10 seconds. Let the glue set overnight. Reinsert the batteries and screw the battery cap back on.
