How to Braze Copper to Stainless

Joining copper and stainless steel is a common task in plumbing applications, particularly for food preparation and brewing operations. While soldering is the preferred method for joining these two metals, it is possible to connect them with an acetylene torch. If you choose this method, you'll want to pay careful attention to the junction for signs of corrosion or oxidation.

Things You'll Need

  • Degreaser
  • Rag
  • Acetylene torch
  • AWS-3A Flux
  • Protective mask

Instructions

    • 1

Clean all of the metal parts you want to connect using a degreaser and rag. Then, apply the flux to the parts you want to join using a solder gun.

    • 2

Put the protective mask on and turn on the acetylene torch. Apply the flame to the joint portion of the parts you want to solder together. If you're using a fitting to connect two pieces, run the torch on it first to minimize heat exposure for the main joint.

    • 3

Join the fitting to the first joint you want to connect, or just connect the two pieces, and use the torch to braze the place where the pieces meet. Depending on the size and positioning of the pieces, you may need a vise or a C-clamp to hold the pieces while you braze.

Repeat Steps 1-3 for each place you want to join the copper and stainless steel.
