Mettler Balance Ae240 Operating Instructions

The Mettler AE 240 analytical balance is a digital scale that is intended for use in chemical and metals laboratories for precise weight measurements of small quantities of substances. This dual range metric balance weighs items from 0 gram to 41 grams (0 oz. to 1.446 oz.) when set for its lower range. Its upper range is from 0 gram to 205 grams (0 oz. to 7.312 oz). Its digital readout provides readings to 0.01 mg in the lower range and 0.1 mg in the upper range. You need to prepare and calibrate the balance before use.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Place the balance on a stable, flat working surface where there is no direct sunlight or drafts.

    • 2

Turn the balance around so that the rear panel faces you. Slide the voltage selector on the top left hand corner of the rear panel to the 115-volt position.

    • 3

Turn the balance back around so that the display faces you. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.

    • 4

Position the flat weighing pan on the base of the balance so that the conical peg centers the pan in the opening at the base of the weighing chamber. Adjust the two leveling screws on the rear sides of the balance so that the bubble in the level indicator at the front right of the base is centered.

    • 5

Press and release the large black single control bar at the front of the balance. Wait for all of the segments of the digital readout to stop flashing and the zero to appear. Press it again and wait for "-rng" to appear in the digital readout. Release the bar and press it again briefly to choose between the lower 40-gram and upper 200-gram range, as represented by -rng 40 and -rng 200.

    • 6

Wait for four dashes and then the zero reading to appear in the display. Allow the scale to remain connected to the power supply for at least 60 minutes before calibrating it.

    Calibration and Settings

    • 7

Press and hold the single control bar until "Cal" appears in the left portion of the digital display. Release the control bar. Allow the display to change to "Cal - - - - " followed by "Cal 100."

    • 8

Move the calibration lever on the right front of the base of the scale all the way to the rear until the display changes to "Cal ---." Allow it to change again to "100,000" and then to a blinking display of "Cal 0."

    • 9

Pull the calibration lever all the way toward the front of the balance. Wait for the display to change to "----" followed by the zero display. This completes the calibration process.

    • 10

Press the bar to set the integration time until "Int" appears in the display. Release the control bar and then press it again to select from "Int -1-" for short-duration weighing, "Int -2-" for normal use and "Int -3-" for a long measuring cycle in unfavorable conditions. Release the button once you have selected your setting and wait for the display to return to zero.

    • 11

Press the bar again until "Asd" appears in the display so you can set the stability selector. Release it and press it again to choose between "Asd OFF" for regular use, "Asd -1-" for less sensitivity and a shorter pause before data is released, and "Asd - 2-" for more sensitivity and a longer pause before the reading appears in the display. Release the button when you have reached the setting of your choice and wait for the display to return to zero.

    Tare and Weighing

    • 12

Open the sliding glass door at the right side of the balance. Place the vessel in which you will be weighing the substance (the tare) into the weighing chamber. Close the glass door.

    • 13

Wait a few seconds for the weight of the container to appear on the display. Press the control bar briefly so that the display reads zero. You have now accounted for the tare.

    • 14

Open the glass door and place the substance or substances to be weighed into the container. Close the door and wait for the weight to appear in the display. The two last digits of the display will blank out as you are adding the substance and appear again when you are finished.

    • 15

Wait for the green dot in the display to go out as well before you note the weight of your substances, if you have chosen "Asd -1-" or "Asd -2-" in Step 5 of Section 2.

    • 16

Remove the container with the substance inside. Clean it thoroughly or tare a new container before repeating all of the steps for any additional substances you want to weigh.

    • 17

Clean the balance with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Brush out any residues in the weighing chamber with the soft brush that is included with your balance.
