Torque is a measurement of rotational force. Scientists express the torque calculation as "T = fd," in which T is torque, f is force measured in pounds or ounces, and d is distance measured in feet or inches. Looking at the equation, you can see that increasing distance or force will also increase torque. This is why mechanics use wrenches with long handles for especially stubborn nuts: the long handle of the wrench increases the d, or distance, value of the equation, and thereby increases torque. Converting from pound inches (or inches per pound) to pound feet (or feet per pound) in torque is straightforward.
