How to Create a Relative Frequency Distribution

A frequency distribution shows how often each event occurs in an experiment or other study. For example, a frequency distribution of 100 rolls of a die would list the number of times each outcome occurred. A relative frequency distribution shows the proportion of events rather than the absolute number of events.

Instructions

    • 1

Count the number of times each event occurred. In the example of 100 rolls of a die, this might be:

      1 - 18

      2 - 17

      3 - 16

      4 - 18

      5 - 15

      6 - 16

    • 2

Add the number of times to find the total number of events. In the example, 18+17+16+18+15+16 = 100.

    • 3

Divide each number of occurrences by the total number and make a new table. In the example, this is:

      1 - 0.18

      2 - 0.17

      3 - 0.16

      4 - 0.18

      5 - 0.15

      6 - 0.16
