How to Construct a Pendulum

Physicists classify a pendulum as a simple machine, which means that it is a construction capable of movement and is composed of few parts. You only need a weighted object, string, and something from which to suspend the aforementioned components. Though pendulums appear to swing from side-to-side, they also rotate in a slight ellipse as they go back and forth. The rotation of the Earth causes the pendulum to move in this manner. As a result, scientists use them to gain insight into the planet's movements in the solar system.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Stick or rod
  • String
  • Small, weighty object

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of string that is at least two inches shorter than the depth of the bucket.

    • 2

Tie one end of the string around a small, weighty object like a bouncy ball, magnet or coin. While you can tie the string around almost any object, it will be helpful to choose an object with a whole or other opening to make tying the string easier.

    • 3

Tie the other rend of the string in the center of the stick or rod.

    • 4

Drop the weighted object into the bucket. Rest the stick across the top of the bucket to suspend the pendulum.

    • 5

Push the string or object to initiate its rotational movements.
