How to Break Down Mixed Fractions

Fractions consist of a numerator on top and a denominator on the bottom separated by a horizontal line that represents division. In a proper fraction, the numerator is smaller than the denominator and the result of that division can only be a decimal. In improper fractions, the numerator is larger than the denominator and the division can result in a whole number or a decimal. Improper fractions can also be broken down into the form of a mixed fraction.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert an improper fraction to a mixed fraction form by first dividing the numerator by the denominator. Write the whole number portion of the answer as the new leading number and the remainder of the answer as the new numerator over the original denominator.

    • 2

Convert the improper fraction 13/3 into a mixed number. Begin by dividing 13 by 3: 13 / 3 = 4 with a remainder of 1. Note that the division doesn't need to be carried out exactly, just to the point of the whole number and the remainder.

    • 3

Write the 4 as the leading number of the mixed fraction and the 1 as the new numerator over the original denominator: 4 1/3. Check the answer by multiplying the leading number to the denominator and adding the numerator to form the original numerator: 4 * 3 + 1 = 13.
