How to Rewrite a Fraction Into a Percent

Fractions have a top number called the numerator and a bottom number called the denominator. The numerator and denominator are separated by a horizontal bar that denotes division. Because the numerator of a proper fraction is smaller, the division results in a decimal. This is because the numerator is really a part of a whole -- the denominator. Percentages are also part of a whole, where the whole is always 100 or 100 percent.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert a fraction to percentage form by dividing the numerator by the denominator to find the decimal form. Multiply the decimal form by 100, round off where necessary, and add a percentage symbol to the end.

    • 2

Convert the fraction 8 / 15 into a percent. Use a calculator, or long division, to calculate the decimal form: 8 / 15 = 0.5333... where the dots represent that the 3 in the decimal continues forever. Round the decimal form to 0.53.

    • 3

Multiply the decimal by 100 to find the percentage form: 0.53 * 100 = 53 percent.
