How to Determine the Acidity Level in Super Glue Fuming

Acidity is the ease with which a given substance will part with a proton. This is measured using the pH scale, in which each number is the log of the number of protons released by a substance. While pH 7 is neutral, anything below 7 is an acid and anything above 7 is a base. Determining the acidity of super glue fumes is achieved by the use of pH strips, sensitized papers that will turn a particular color when exposed to different levels of pH.

Things You'll Need

  • Mason jar
  • pH strips
  • Chart for reading pH strips

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the super glue fumes in the mason jar for at least 15 minutes by holding the mason jar above the glue.

    • 2

Insert a pH strip into the jar and close the jar.

    • 3

Observe the color change on the pH strip. Find the matching color on the pH strip chart: next it you will find the pH associated with that color. You have now identified the acidity of the super glue fumes.
