How to Corrode Steel

In many areas of the country, the preferred finish of interior steel decor is one of a rusted finish. If you are working on an art project and are looking to intentionally rust steel for a rustic finish, you could leave it to the elements as any steel will rust when exposed to moisture of a period of time. For reasons of efficiency, consider intentionally finishing your item where it will rust effectively in a controlled environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your gloves and your safety goggles. Pour the metal etching solution into a corrosion-proof container to cover the entire piece metal you wish to rust for two hours. You can obtain metal etching solution at any home supply store.

    • 2

Take the metal out and rinse soaking it in a solution of water and vinegar consisting of 1 cup vinegar for every 2 gallons. You will need to make enough solution to soak the entire piece of metal.

    • 3

Rinse off the metal and then place in a hot salt water solution overnight. Use 1 cup of salt for every 2 gallons of water, heated to at least 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove and allow to dry. Rust should form over the surface quickly.

    • 4

Spray the item with water occasionally until you get the desired rust effect.
