How to Install an Ampere Meter

Electrical signals are the basis of modern-day technologies. There are a number of measurements that can be performed on electrical signals and examples include voltage (potential energy per unit charge), current (a scaled velocity of charge carriers), and resistance (a measure of electrical friction). Electrical current is measured in amperes (amps) and can be measured using a ampere meter. These devices consist of a number of inputs and a digital display that shows the measured value.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the signal to be measured to the ampere meter. Ampere meters normally have two inputs and these are normally colored red and black. The red input corresponds to the positive terminal and the black input corresponds to the negative terminal.

    • 2

Select the measurement range. Ampere meters normally have a "Range" button. Press the range button to cycle through the ranges. If the rough value of current is not known, then select auto-range.

    • 3

Perform the measurement. The ampere meter is now installed and is ready to take measurements. Switch on the electrical circuit that is being measured. The screen on the ampere meter should now indicate the value of measured current.
