How to Calculate the Strength of Nylon Thread

Nylon thread comes in a variety of different weights or thicknesses and types, such as bonded and composite. Each type has a different tensile strength characteristics. Measuring the strength of nylon thread is relatively simple, and is usually done using the Chatillion scale and loupes.

Things You'll Need

  • Chatillion scale
  • Varying loupe sizes
  • Nylon thread of weight desired

Instructions

    • 1

Select the weight of the thread you want to test. Record the type of nylon thread you are testing on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Tie the thread around the top hook of the Chatillion scale. Loop the thread around the hook several times before making the knot; make sure the knot is secure enough that it will not come undone.

    • 3

Tie the other end of the thread to a stationary hook in the same fashion, so that the scale is free-hanging.

    • 4

Test the scale with your hand to observe its reading, applying light pressure on the lower hook. Familiarize yourself with the scale and its sensitivity before applying the loupes.

    • 5

Begin applying loupes to the bottom hook of the scale, using small (single ounce, if possible) increments. The scale should accurately read how much weight is being applied.

    • 6

Continue adding loupes until the thread breaks, and record the weight limit at which the thread broke. Repeat for other varieties and weighs of thread.
