Instructions
Familiarize yourself with the specific problems caused by humans in the tundra, forest, aquatic, desert and grassland biomes. For example, the problem faced by the forest biome is deforestation for purposes of increasing grazing lands for cattle. Choose the biome you wish to help preserve.
Review your lifestyle for current activities that contribute to harming the biome you wish to protect. Boycott purchases in industries that are associated with human-created problems in the biome you are protecting. For example, boycott purchases of imported beef, lamb, goat or bison from regions where rainforest depletion is a problem, such as Latin America. Buy organic over conventional produce to reduce agriculture runoff into waterways. Ride a bicycle to work to reduce pollution caused by gasoline manufacturing.
Donate money to conservationist organizations focused on preserving your biome of choice. These organizations provide materials for educating the broader public, as well as take special steps to lobby governments for the necessary legislation and enforcement on the local and federal level. Volunteer with a local chapter of the conservationist group to support their efforts.
Write your local elected officials, the president and your congressperson. Inform them of the problems in your biome caused by human activity. Encourage them to enact legislation that reduces industrial waste and restricts animal product imports from regions where forest depletion is motivated by demand for animal products.
Educate your friends and family on their impact on the biome you wish to preserve. Encourage them to join you in reducing the negative impact of their lifestyles on the biome you are protecting. Go door-to-door in your neighborhood with informational materials that you can leave with them for consideration.
