How to Lengthen the Light Duration of an LED Flasher

An LED can be made to flash in a predictable manner through the use of transistors that regulate the flow of electricity. To lengthen the amount of time the LED remains lit, adjust the potentiometer (POT) setting on the circuit board controlling the flashing process. Household tools will be needed, but no special equipment is necessary. The LED will not be damaged in any way by changing the speed of the flashing.

Things You'll Need

  • Flasher unit
  • LED strip
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-edged plastic-tipped jeweler's screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the flasher unit's power cord from the wall outlet. Unplug the LED strip's power cord from the flasher unit's outlet.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the back and/or sides of the flasher unit, depending on the manufacturer, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the two sections of the flasher unit apart. Place the section that has the circuit board inside on your work surface face up.

    • 3

Locate the POT screw next to a transistor on the circuit board. Typically the screw is silver.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the screw. Rotate the screw a quarter turn counterclockwise to lengthen the duration of the LED's illumination.

    • 5

Reassemble the two sections and reattach the screws. Plug the power cord from the LED strip back into the outlet on the flasher unit. Plug the flasher unit's power cord back into the wall outlet.
