What Is a Mylar Capacitor?

A capacitor can be defined as a device used for the storage of electric charge. Two conductors separated by a dielectric substance like paper or mica forms a capacitor. It's similar to a battery. Even though storage capacity is less than that of a battery, it charges and discharges more efficiently. There is a wide variety of capacitors including dielectric capacitors, film capacitors, ceramic capacitors and electrolytic capacitors. A type of capacitor which uses Mylar as the dielectric substance is a Mylar capacitor.
  1. Mylar Capacitor

    • The Mylar used in a Mylar capacitor is a type of polyester film which can withstand high temperature. This type of capacitor is one of the most common choices for use in instrumentation equipment and many high quality communication equipment units. There are variations in shape, sizes and style of construction, but possibly the most-recognized and long-lasting type is the green or brown resin-dipped radial type, which along with its small size makes it apt for circuit boards.

    Features of Mylar capacitor

    • Mylar capacitors have some diverse features. They are high in demand as they have va ery small size and are lightweight. Moreover, they can be automatically inserted and have superior quality of heat resistance. They are also resistant to humidity as well as most solvents. They are dimensionally stable and tear-resistant with high physical and optical strength. They have excellent electrical and mechanical properties

    Application of Mylar capacitors

    • There are different types of capacitors which vary in their characteristics. The materials present in a Mylar capacitor includes Mylar coated with aluminum, along with several other components which pave way for its various applications. They find application in audio circuits as well as speaker crossover circuits. They are also used for radio and digital application. In certain parts of a circuit where unwanted signals are to be avoided from interfering, Mylar capacitors prove to be of great use. A Mylar capacitor can, at times, also be used for timer circuits.

    Conclusion

    • More and more developments are being made in the field of Mylar capacitor as they are highly applicable in the electric circuits. Mylar capacitors can handle a voltage range up to 1,800 volts. Mylar capacitors are used in TV sets, pulse circuits of radio and various other electronic equipment. They are smaller but stronger than those capacitors in which paper is used.
