How to Determine the Mass of a Mole of Protons

Scientists have long known that the atom is made of three particles: the neutron, electron and proton. Protons, along with neutrons, make up the inner nucleus of the atom. The proton has a defined mass, although that mass is very small, and so you can readily calculate the mass of one mole of these particles. A mole is a unit used in chemistry to define a set number of particles.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the mass of a single proton into the calculator. This value is 1.6726 x 10^-27 kg.

    • 2

Multiply the value you just entered by the quantity of particles in a mole. This is an extremely large number: 6.02214 x 10^23.

    • 3

Report the result of your calculation as the mass of one mole of protons, in units of kg. Your result will be 0.001007 kg.
