How to Use PH Electrode Storage Solutions

One of the most widely used electrodes in chemistry is the pH electrode. The pH electrode measures the pH of solutions in the standard electrode configuration but other configurations are adapted for the measure of other types of liquids. Applications that use the electrode periodically need to store the electrode properly to maintain its responsiveness and accuracy. In most instances, electrode storage solution is used to store the electrode during periods of no use.

Things You'll Need

  • pH buffer 4
  • pH buffer 7
  • pH electrode
  • Small beakers
  • Electrode storage solution

Instructions

    • 1

Maintain the electrode during short periods of nonuse by using pH 4 or 7 buffer solution. In the absence of one of these buffers, store the electrode in a small beaker of electrode storage solution. The purpose of the storage solution is to maintain the sensing layer of the glass electrode. If the layer dries out, the response and stability of the electrode will greatly decrease.

    • 2

Store pH electrodes for long periods by capping them in pH electrode storage solution to keep the sensing tip damp or wet. Keep the hydrated layer on the tip of the electrode moist to avoid damage.

    • 3

Wash the tip of the electrode with de-ionized water and blot the tip dry. Fill the electrode cap with a small amount of electrode storage solution and place the cap on the bulb end of the electrode. The solution will help to make a seal against the body of the electrode.

    • 4

Check the condition of the tip periodically. If the storage solution has evaporated, refill the cap and replace it.

    • 5

Soak the electrode in pH 7 buffer solution if the bulb dries out during storage. Allow the bulb to rehydrate for a minimum of a few hours before calibration and use.
