How to Cure a Brand New Crucible

Crucibles are used in chemistry laboratories as a way to contain chemical compounds or materials that are going to be subjected to high heat. Laboratory crucibles are generally made out of porcelain or an inert metal. The use of a crucible requires precision and is best done under the supervision of an experienced chemist until you are proficient in the techniques required. Prior to using a new crucible, it must be cured or tempered to ensure it is prepared to function adequately in the laboratory.

Things You'll Need

  • Bunsen burner or other laboratory burner
  • Laser thermometer
  • Tongs
  • Wire gauze
  • Balance

Instructions

    • 1

Place the crucible on the Bunsen burner using tongs. Turn on the burner, keeping the heat low.

    • 2

Increase the heat until the crucible reaches an approximate temperature of 500 degrees, as indicated by the laser thermometer. Hold at this temperature for approximately 20 minutes.

    • 3

Increase the heat again, this time allowing the crucible to heat until it becomes red-hot. Once it reaches red heat, turn off the heat and allow the crucible to cool gradually.

    • 4

Remove the crucible with your tongs, and place it on top of the balance, both of which should be on top of the wire gauze to protect your working surface.
