How to Use a Fluke Tester

Consumer electronics devices are now commonplace within the home. Unfortunately electrical components within devices inevitably fail, and when this occurs a Fluke multimeter (tester) can be used to identify the faulty component. Fluke multimeters consist of a main unit with a digital screen, a number of controls and two measurement probes. The device is capable of testing a variety of electrical quantities such as AC voltage, DC voltage, current and resistance.

Instructions

      Connect the two measurement probes to the main body of the Fluke multimeter. Two measurement probes are supplied with the multimeter. Connect the red measurement probe to the positive terminal and black measurement probe to the negative terminal.

      Select the desired measurement function by rotating the dial on the front counterclockwise. Fluke multimeters normally have a choice of AC voltage, DC voltage, current and resistance measurements. Press the range button to cycle through different measurement ranges, or choose auto-range.

      Bring the measurement probes into contact with the electrical component that needs to be measured. The display should change from "0.00" to a finite value. The unit of measurement will be displayed to the right of the measured value. Voltage is measured in volts, current is measured in amps, and resistance is measured in ohms.

      Switch off the multimeter and disconnect the multimeter leads for storage.
