Criminology
Criminology is an area of the social sciences that relies heavily on the work of sociologists and social anthropologists. Criminology is a scientific study of the nature and cause of criminal behavior, as well as the extent and control of it. The field looks at a crime on an individual and societal level. The study of the distribution and causes of crime is a large aspect of the science of criminology, which relies on using statistical and quantifiable methods. Crime prevention on a societal level is another aspect of criminology, which focuses on behavioral models from research and observation.
Forensic Science
Forensic scientists work to answer questions related to crime or criminal behavior. They work on behalf of courts and police to uncover blood evidence or DNA evidence. The field uses a very wide spectrum of sciences; it's heavily based on analysis of items found at crime scenes. Many forensic scientists are specialized into a niche area in which they are experts, such as a blood spatter specialist or a medical examiner.
Psychology
Criminal psychology is a subspecialty of the larger field of psychology. Criminal psychologists study the behavior and mental process of criminals. They often help police on murder cases and work to build a profile of a person committing crimes, or to assess the sanity of the criminal once a suspect has been identified. The field is still growing as more neurological tests are developed to identify and assess behavioral deficiencies. Criminal psychology aims to use past criminal behavior to highlight possible future crime.
Penology
Penology is a social science involving the practice and philosophy of society's attempts to prevent crime or punish criminal activities. In general, the practice revolves around the prison system, although penologists also do research on novel methods of crime prevention. The science has to satisfy the victim and society at large in their need for proper punishment.
