How to Convert Gauss to Oersted

Ferromagnetic materials possess an intrinsic magnetic field. If a ferromagnetic material is placed within an external magnetic field H (measured in Oersted) then the magnetic flux B (measured in Gauss) within the ferromagnetic material increases. The total field B generated inside a ferromagnetic material is proportional to the magnetic permeability, which is a measure of the material properties. Air has no intrinsic magnetic field, so in air B=H. Hence, in air one unit of Gauss equals one unit of Oersted.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the probe into the Gaussmeter. The probe is a rod-like device with a cable and plug attached. Turn on the Gaussmeter and select the units of Gauss.

    • 2

Bring the probe into range of the magnetic field that needs to be measured. The display on the Gaussmeter will show the magnitude of the magnetic field in Gauss.

    • 3

Write down the reading from the Gaussmeter. One Oersted is equal to one Gauss, so no conversion is necessary.
