How to Round to the Nearest Million

Rounding is the mathematical operation that reduces the number of digits in numeric values. Keeping extra digits beyond a certain point is often unnecessary, because many such values can be calculated only with limited precision. Rounding of large whole numbers also allows you to easier work with them; for example, to quickly compare a series of values.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the number you need to round; for example, 564,923,428.

    • 2

Find the digit in the number you have to round to; the number has "4" in the millions position that is the seventh place from the right.

    • 3

Analyze the next digit to the right from the millions position to determine if it is less than -- or greater than -- five. This digit corresponds to the hundred thousands place, and, in this example, is "9," which is greater than five.

    • 4

Add one to the digit at the millions place if the hundred thousands place is five or greater, otherwise leave the digit unchanged. In this example, add 1 to the digit at the millions place making the number 565,923,428.

    • 5

Substitute all the numbers beyond the millions position with zeros to finish rounding. In this example, rounding the number to the nearest million results in 565,000,000
