How to Combine Like Terms That Have Decimals

Simple linear equations contain only one variable, or letter representing an unknown value, and numbers. The purpose of the equation is to solve for the value of that variable. This is done through using algebra to isolate the variable on one side of the equation. The solution process might include combining like terms. Combining like terms means to add (or subtract) together components that can be combined. Numbers without variables can be combined with each other and numbers attached to variables can combine with other numbers attached to the same variable.

Instructions

    • 1

Solve a simple linear equation by combining like terms that occur on the same side of the equation, then using algebra to move other terms to the side of like terms. Isolate the variable on one side of the equation and simplify answers when possible.

    • 2

Solve the simple linear equation of 1.5x + 3.7x + 5 = 8 + 4. Combine the like terms on the right side of the equation: 1.5x + 3.7x + 5 = 12. Add the decimals to combine the like terms on the left side of the equation: 5.2x + 5 = 12.

    • 3

      Subtract 5 from both sides: 5.2x = 7. Use a calculator to divide both sides by 5.2: x = 1.35 (rounded).
