Making Hydrogen
A simple way to make hydrogen gas is to separate the two hydrogen atoms from the oxygen atom in water. This is usually done by electrolyzing the water. Sending electricity through the water gives the oxygen and hydrogen atoms enough energy to break free from one another. The oxygen and hydrogen atoms turn to gas form and shoot out of the water. It is at this point in the process that a bubbler is used.
Purifying Hydrogen Gas
Purifying hydrogen is an important part of of the hydrogen electrolysis process. The gas is cleaned as it passes through a water bubbler column. The bubblers are filled one-third full of water. The gas is saturated with water vapor and purified as it enters the column.
Using a Bubbler
A smaller bubbler for home hydrogen production receives hydrogen through a tube. The hydrogen bubbles through the water from the bottom of the bubbler and out of the tube at the top. Any hydrogen reaction or backfire occurs within the bubbler.
Electricity Sources for Electrolysis
There are a number of sources used for electrolysis during the process of making hydrogen gas. Solar energy can be harnessed to fuel a hydrogen energy electrolyzer system that can provide electricity for a home. For experimental purposes, a 12-volt battery can be used to transfer electricity to water, separating hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Be careful; hydrogen and oxygen gas are highly flammable.
