How to Measure on a Micropipette

A micropipette is a laboratory instrument designed for measuring small quantities of liquid. A scientist can choose from three sizes: a P20, which holds up to 20 microliters; a P200, which holds from 20 to 200 microliters; and a P1000, which holds from 200 microliters to 1 milliliter. To properly use a micropipette, always point the tip downward so that the liquid does not flow into the body of the instrument. Also, when drawing or ejecting a liquid, always depress the plunger slowly to ensure that no air bubbles fill the pipette and that the liquid does not clog the tip.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the appropriate micropipette for the quantity of liquid you want to measure.

    • 2

Turn the volume adjustment dial near the top until the digital readout displays the appropriate measurement.

    • 3

Open a box of appropriately sized tips, being cautious not to contaminate them by touching them with your hands.

    • 4

Press the micropipette's shaft firmly into a tip. When the tip is attached, remove the micropipette and close the box.

    • 5

Depress the plunger on the top of the pipette until it reaches the first stop, or point of resistance.

    • 6

Insert the tip just below the surface of the liquid and slowly release the plunger.

    • 7

Place the tip into an empty container, depress the plunger to the first stop and wait for a moment. Then slowly depress it to the second stop to eject the liquid.

    • 8

Slowly release the plunger once all the liquid has left the tip.

    • 9

Press the tip ejector knob to dispose of the tip.
