How to Extract Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is what makes leaves and certain plants green. It absorbs sunlight and turns it into energy. Chlorophyll plays a part in photosynthesis by converting water, carbon dioxide, and sunshine into oxygen. By removing chlorophyll from leaves, the leaf's true color will appear, making it red, gold, or yellow.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 large green leaf
  • 2 cups water
  • Pot
  • Glass bowl
  • 1 cup rubbing alcohol
  • spoon

Instructions

    • 1

Boil 2 cups of water in a pot on high heat.

    • 2

Place leaf into boiling water for 2 minutes.

    • 3

Take the pot off the burner after turning the stove off. Remove the leaf with a spoon.

    • 4

Pour 1 cup of rubbing alcohol into a glass bowl and place the leaf in. Put the glass bowl inside of the pot for about one hour. The water will turn green when time is up -- that is the chlorophyll coming out of the leaf.
