What Are the Causes of Red Rust on Pole-Barn Panels?

Red rust is a common phenomenon that occurs on nearly all types of metals except for precious metals. Since many pole-barn panels are constructed of metal, it's only natural that they acquire red rust over time. The process that creates the rust is called oxidation, which is caused by four main factors.
  1. Humidity

    • Pole barns located in areas with consistently high humidity are very likely to develop red rust. The moist conditions are breeding grounds for the oxidation process to occur. This happens when the moisture on the barn panels mixes with oxygen from the air. Over time, these two elements oxidize on the barn panels and turn to red rust.

    Temperature

    • Locations that consistently experience high temperatures also make it easier for red rust to form. Essentially, hot weather speeds up the oxidation process and makes it possible for corrosion to occur. As a result, pole barns located in warmer climates are very likely to have problems with red rust.

    Fog

    • Substantial levels of fog also make it easy for red rust to occur. When fog moves in, it basically traps a high volume of moisture in a concentrated area. Therefore, pole barns located in places receiving significant fog will often have problems with red rest.

    Salt

    • Salt is an additional factor that creates red rust on pole-barn panels. Usually, salt in the air occurs in places located near a body of saltwater, such as an ocean or sea. Over time, the consistent contact with salt is ideal for creating the oxidation reaction.
