How to Convert cm3 to mm3

The SI system of measurement units, otherwise known as the metric system, is very widely used for a number of reasons. One of the main advantages of using metric units is the ease of conversion between different measures. The meter is the metric unit of length, a centimeter is one hundredth of a meter and a millimeter is one thousandth. The metric system cubes these measures to produce units of volume; the cubic centimeter and the cubic millimeter. You can convert from cm3 to mm3 using a single conversion factor.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the numerical value of your volume measurement, in units of cubic centimeters, into the calculator. For example, if you had a beaker containing 50 cubic centimeters of a liquid and you wanted to convert this measure, you would enter 50.

    • 2

Multiply the value you just entered by 1,000. This is the conversion factor between cubic centimeters and cubic millimeters. This factor comes about since there are 10 millimeters in a centimeter, and so a cubic centimeter would contain 10 x 10 x 10 or 1,000 cubic millimeters.

    • 3

Report the result of your calculation as the liquid volume in units of cubic millimeters. In the example, you would calculate 50 times 1,000 and report the liquid volume in the beaker as being 50,000 mm3.
