How to Convert Bushels of Corn to Tons

United States customary unit system employs bushels to measure volume. Bushels are primarily used to measure the dry volume of agriculture commodities such as wheat, rice or corn. One bushel is equal to 4 pecks or 8 gallons. One ton is equal to 1,000 kilograms, the unit of mass in the metric (international) system. Convert the amount of corn to tons with this formula: weight = density * volume.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply bushels by 0.03524 to convert them to cubic meters. For example, 500 bushels of corn are equal to 500 * 0.03524 = 17.62 cubic meters.

    • 2

Find out the density of the corn (see Resources); the density of corn (shelled) is 721 kg per cubic meter.

    • 3

Multiply the amount of corn in cubic meters by the density to calculate the mass of the corn. In this example, the weight of corn is 17.62 * 721= 12,704 kg.

    • 4

Divide the weight of corn by 1,000 to convert it to tons. In this example, the mass is 12,704 / 1,000 = 12.704 tons.
