How to Interpret Tarot Card Combinations

The tarot is an ancient art of divination that is predictive; the tarot is also used to offer guidance through particular complications or challenges that you may be facing in your life. Laying out the spread of the Celtic Cross, for example, exposes various atmospheres that surround the question. By narrowing down some of the specifics of the question, such as the reason it was asked, the things in the past that have influenced the situation and forces in the present and future that will shape the outcome.

Instructions

  Lay out the spread, as you normally would. Count the number of cards that have something in common before you begin the reading.

  Look for the cards of Major Arcana first. These are the ones that are numbered 0 through 22, which represent the range from the beginning of a karmic experience to the completion of one. A karmic experience is one that we seemingly have no control over, but one during which fate intervenes and forces the outcome. If, out of the 10 cards you laid out, four or more are of the Major Arcana, then there are forces in place that are going to cause things to happen based upon the actions you have taken in the past regarding the situation or things that have happened that you did not cause. Learn from this that whatever happens, there will be some pieces to the complexity of the situation that will occur whether you do or do not take action.

  Count the number of Aces in the reading. If there is one or more, indications are that a new beginning will ensue. Read that the Ace of Rods in combination with any other ace will inspire new growth, that the Ace of Pentacles a new venture of security, that the Ace of Cups, will inspire emotional involvement, and that the Ace of Swords will make the new situation challenging.

  Look for Pages in the reading, which indicate that experience will be gained, but that nothing will come from it presently. Consider that the pages in combination show education, practice, sparring, and that although ideas and planning are actions that will be taken, that the project will not end during the span of this reading, unless the final outcome indicates otherwise.

  Count the number of each suit in the reading. The suit that has the most cards will be the guiding force. If it is Cups, then the reading may be about a relationship. If Pentacles predominate, then the reading may be guided by business or financial matters. If the reading has more Rods than any other suit, then your life will be renewed, and if it is Swords that predominate, then you are going to need to plan and be ambitious and bold about your quest.
