How to Turn Tarot Cards

If you are just learning how to read tarot cards, you have probably found out that everyone seems to have a preferred version of the procedure. Some of these versions are highly ritualistic and structured, while others are much more relaxed. The variations can be confusing and frustrating, especially to a beginner who doesn't want to mess up a procedure and possibly ruin a reading. Even something as small as turning the cards over seems rife with peril. The good news is that reading tarot is a personal venture that allows for some wiggle room.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the cards down in the spread you want to read. You can lay out all of the cards before turning them over, or you can turn each card over as you're putting it down.

    • 2

Turn each card over to the side. This preserves its reversed or non-reversed status. Tarot expert Joan Bunning writes to turn the card "as you would turn the page of a book."

    • 3

Leave the card alone after turning it over if you're using reversed cards. If you are not using reversed cards and accidentally reversed some during shuffling, turn them around so they are right-side-up.
