Learning the Basics
Find a beginner's book on magic. There are occult bookstores in most cities that offer introductory books on magic. If you aren't sure about what type of magic you wish to study, ask store employees for advice.
Join a magic course. These classes are usually small, and you can learn the basics and train yourself later. You can find information about magic courses at many occult stores, including occult bookstores or tarot card dealers.
Join a real magic lodge or temple. Many organizations exist that help members train themselves in the art of magic. Some of the more respectable organizations are the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the OTO and the College of Thelema.
Training Independently
Practice basic magical rituals. You can begin by choosing a basic magical ritual that you may have learned from a book, teacher or friend. Practice this ritual until you are successful most of the time. After you become competent, you may move on to more difficult rituals.
Train your friends. One way to master a concept is by teaching it to someone else. Since you're training alone, it's important that you can prove your competence to someone else, ensuring you're learning the rituals and can demonstrate them.
Keep a record of your improvements. If you want to push yourself to the next level, write down your attempted spells. You should update your notebook frequently and make notes next to each spell, showing whether your spell was successful. After a few weeks, you should recognize your weak points and strong points, and adjust your training appropriately.
